The first light found Dregner on the walls.

He'd been awake an hour already, boots on stone that still held the night's cold. He watched the treeline sharpen from black mass to individual trunks as the sky bled from grey to pale copper. The fortress sat high on the ridge where Manton Kilker had built it. Dregner had thrown his corpse from the balcony. It was iron-seamed rock and timber ramparts, the mine shafts running deep beneath. Three weeks since the last body had been carried out. Three weeks since the last attack. The longest stretch of peace any of them had known.
